Where should we assemble our garland?
Consider piggybacking on a farmers market, concert, block party, or any joyful community event. Ripping the fabric makes a raucous spectacle.
Any tips to encourage participation?
So long it feels like a party and a few folks are happily engaged, passerbys will join in with little instruction or oversight.
- Music all day.
- Ripping fabric is a joyful activity that is best done in pairs. Demo by giving one person a notched end to hold and tear.
- Be sure to take tons of ‘in process’ pic/video.
- Encourage folks to post selfies with #WomenRoar24
- Help folks scan the QR codes to register to vote.
- Encourage participants to take extra palm cards to give to their friends.
How long does it take to assemble the garland?
This public art project is all about community engagement. While a handful of enthusiastic volunteers could have the whole project done in a few hours, it’s a fun hands-on activity that can take place over days.
The piece is not the point. The point is the process. Making the garland and embellishing with handwritten messages is the catnip to register voters, drive buzz, and amplify community voice.
Can we customize our garland?
Yes! Evolve the project any way you like. Add hanging tags, write on the fabric directly, or add more art elements like crocheted bits. Be creative!
We’re aiming for a cohesive national expression that feels vibrant, authentic, and joyful. Please stay within the pink theme and keep it handmade and positive.
Is the garland weatherproof?
Your garland will hold up fine in the rain, although waterlogged fabric can be heavy. Be sure it’s thoroughly dry before rolling up. Remove any luggage tags that look ratty and encourage folks to add new messages. Remember, it’s all about the process. Engagement is the only thing that matters.
Yay, we made it! Now what?
Your garland is infinitely adaptable and evolving. Use it to amplify any protest, rally, or tabling effort.
- Display it horizontally between trees or poles or on a fence; or hang vertically from a pole or window.
- The elastic can be endlessly cut and retied at any point. Knot the elastic and end points to prevent unraveling.
- Please be mindful of city ordinances, private property, and traffic flow.
- Consider displaying your garland in a store window when not in use. Or paint a sea of thrift store furniture for a delicious, power pink tableau.
What are fun add-on activities?
- Set a table with colored sharpies and blank luggage tags so folks can add hand-written messages.
- Distribute tiny fabric pieces with safety pins for easy lapel pins.
- Tie a few strips to an elastic hair band to make eye-catching door hangers
- Make small bundles to decorate microphones, podiums, posts, etc.
- Set out buckets of sidewalk chalk, paint rocks, make yarn bracelets, etc.
- Make a pink tableau to serve as a selfie station.
- Play music to make it feel like a party. Check out our Spotify playlist.
