DIY GARLAND KIT

Your kit includes decorations, print collateral, and all the materials to create a fabric garland that stretches 40 yards – an entire city block.

Includes

  • 40 yards pre-notched fabric
  • 40 yards cording/elastic
  • 20 garland signs with zip ties
  • 1,000 2×3″ palm cards
  • 300 pre-strung manilla message tags
  • Butterfly lapel pins
  • 5 Iron-on Love appliqués
  • Welcome letter with instructions
Pink butterfly lapel pins and LOVE appliques

ENERGIZE VOLUNTEERS

Wear pink to make activations feel like a party! Your kit also includes pink butterfly lapel pins and iron-on LOVE appliqués, perfect to decorate capes or tee shirts.

To make, place sequin side up on fabric, cover with a napkin or pillowcase, press hot iron firmly with with steam. Let cool and bask in your awesomeness.

6 STEPS TO CREATE YOUR GARLAND

See the activity at Arts4Impact’s recent activation at Highland Park High School.

1. Tear Into Strips

Crank up the tunes and activate a crowd. Ripping is easiest and way more fun in pairs. So long as a few folks are actively engaged, passerbys will join in without much instruction or oversight. Mix up all the fabrics.

2. Stretch The Line

Secure cord from trees or poles for a waist-high, taut line. Tie several fabric strips along line so it’s not a hazard. You can cut the cord at any point to accommodate foot traffic.

3. Attach Info Cards & Example Strips

Zip tie cards every 6′ (trim plastic tails). Tie several fabric strips along the entire line so that folks will know immediately what to do.

4. Tie Fabric Strips

Attach strips to the line with a French knot (like a scarf) or any way that works. Maintain a happy variety of hues and patterns.

5. Secure Endpoints

Before storing, knot the ends of the garland so it doesn’t unravel. Cut and re-attach the line as needed.

6. Store + Transport

Roll up the garland like a big ball of yarn and stuff in a hefty or mesh bag. If space is an issue, detach info cards and squish out air.

Creating a fabric garland is a joyful activity that builds community and drives engagement. Set up activation where folks are open to having a creative experience. Farmers’ markets, art festivals, block parties are ideal.
